Charybdis and Scylla are the tag-team of the Odyssey. Charybdis was the female whirlpool who was opposite Scylla on the Straits of Messana. Three times a day Charybdis would suck down water so fiercely that not even Poseidon could save a ship that got caught. To avoid her, ships had to stick to the other side of the strait where Scylla resided and sacrifice men in order to pass.

Scylla was a sea-nymph turned monster. She was beautiful and pursued by many, but when she rejected Glaucus, he got a potion from the sorceress Circe to put into Scylla's favorite pool. She was transformed into a many-headed man-eating serpent with snarling dogs on her hips. She would emerge from her cave on the strait to attack passing ships and eat the men aboard.
