The cave-dwelling Echidna was half serpent and half beautiful woman. Most of the monsters of the world were borne from her and her mate Typhon, thus she is known as "The Mother of All Monsters." She herself was a flesh-eating monster and had a poisonous bite. Her most notable offspring include Cerberus, the Chimera, the Hydra, the Sphinx of Thebes, Scylla, the Gorgons such as Medusa, among others.
